TIMELY words, taken from a February 26, 2007 New York Times article entitled, "How Can Opera Carry On?" by Alan Riding.

"...with opera by far the most expensive performing art to produce, even with houses receiving enormous subsidies from governments in Europe and private sponsors in the United States, the high cost of opera seats in most cities tends to put off young music lovers and inevitably reinforces the image of opera as somehow elitist." He goes on to say that there is a groundswell of interest among young people, who are attending live performances.
